FAQ / Typical Session

The best way to understand what homeopathy is and what it can do for you is to try it, visit a homeopath and find out for yourself. If that’s a step too far at the moment ask somebody who either regularly visits a homeopath themselves or who uses homeopathy to treat acute illnesses in their family how homeopathy has helped them.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which works with your body’s natural healing processes. Rather than use chemicals to suppress symptoms, homoeopathy works with those symptoms to treat the underlying cause of ill health.

Homeopathy means ‘treating like with like’. Any substance which can cause a particular illness or set of symptoms in a healthy person may benefit someone who has the same symptoms as a result of ill health. For example if you drink too much coffee you might become excitable, unable to concentrate and unable to sleep. Anyone suffering these symptoms as a result of a shock, surprise or ill health may be prescribed the remedy Coffea.

Some people feel intensely sick from smoking or just smelling tobacco smoke. Because of tobacco's ability to cause intense nausea the homeopathic remedy Tabacum is used as a remedy for seasickness. The key to finding the right remedy is matching the pattern of symptoms a remedy can produce to those that the patient is suffering, thus like cures like.

What Can Homeopathy Do For Me?

Homeopathy is a very practical and flexible complementary medicine. I have used it in treating long standing conditions, acute illnesses, for maintaining health during pregnancy and easing the process of childbirth. Homoeopathy can be used safely alongside conventional medicine. Remedies are safe for use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and the early years of childhood. Used long term homeopathy may reduce one’s susceptibility to recurrent patterns of ill health.

Homeopathy can be used to treat physical and emotional problems. Two good examples are IBS and eczema. Both often have an emotional component such as being aggravated by anxiety. In contrast to conventional medicine homeopathy focuses on both the emotional and physical symptoms. The situations which cause the anxiety may not go away but as treatment progresses one's emotional response may become more balanced and one’s physical symptoms less intense.

How Does Homoeopathy ‘Work With Symptoms’?

The symptoms we all experience during illness are indications that our body is trying to overcome the problem and re-establish health. Symptoms are not bad things, they may be uncomfortable but they are not the problem. The problem is what underlies those symptoms. By gaining a complete understanding of the individual reaction to whatever is affecting the body the homeopath is directed toward a remedy with a similar set of symptoms.

When the body is reacting in a curative way the symptoms it produces are eliminative. A sneeze or a cough is the bodies way of throwing toxins out and away from the respiratory system; diarrhoea and vomiting clears the digestive tract; a fever accelerates the action of the immune system and sweat helps to clear out toxins; boils, pimples and rashes are signs that the body is fighting or expelling toxins on the surface of the skin. These are the reactions of a healthy body. Homeopathic remedies do not suppress these processes but allow them to resolve.

How safe is Homoeopathy?

Homeopathic remedies are very safe provided that they are used in accordance with the instructions of a qualified, registered homoeopath.

As well as being prescribed only according to the law of similars (like cures like) homeopathic remedies are diluted to such a degree that substances such as powerful snake venoms and heavy metals cease to be poisonous.

However, modern science has a long way to go before it can explain exactly why this is possible. This is one of the great controversies surrounding homeopathy. If there is no material substance to act on the tissues of the body how can it possibly work? One explanation is that the essential energy of the diluted substance remains within the water in which it was diluted. The presence of the active principle can no longer be measured chemically, only physically as energy, like electricity or magnetism.

Because there is no chemically reactive substance present to cause side effects, homeopathy is a very safe medicine. Conventional medicines act on the body to promote or suppress certain functions. Anti-biotics are good in the short term but can cause problems if used for a long time. Homeopathic remedies allow the body to respond and get on with the process of healing.

Can Homoeopathy Be Used To Treat Allergies?

Yes, homeopathy can be used to treat allergies. An allergic reaction to a substance that is naturally common in the environment or part of the staple diet is an example of the body's defence mechanism responding inappropriately. Homeopathy can be used to treat allergic reactions.

If you require it, allergy testing using diagnostic kinesiology can be used to help find out what substances you are actually allergic to, oversensitive to or your system is overloaded by.

Homeopathic constitutional treatment can be used to address your underlying susceptibility and your immediate reaction to substances.

Research supporting homeopathy's effectiveness in treating allergies shows that 89% of patients under sixteen suffering from asthma and 68% of patients patients suffering from eczema reported an improvement in their symptoms.

Should I Stay In Touch With My GP If I’m Using Homeopathy?

In a word, yes. GP’s are increasingly welcoming the contribution complementary therapies make to healthcare, 70% feel that they should be more freely available on the NHS. Homeopathy can be used safely alongside conventional medication. If you are trying to come off medicines like HRT, asthma inhalers or anti-depressants it is important that your GP knows what choices you are making. Your GP can also help arrange for any tests which may be necessary.

What Happens During a Homeopathic Consultation?

The best way to find out is to visit a homoeopath yourself, homoeopaths specialise in treating the individual so everybody’s experience of a consultation will be slightly different. However, the bare essentials of each consultation will be the same.

Whatever your age and whatever problem you come with the initial consultation will last about one and a half hours. Why so long? The consultation is an opportunity for me to get to know you, it is a space where you can speak and be listened to. As a homoeopath I need to know who it is I am treating.

Homoeopathy is about treating the person who is ill so that they can overcome their problems using the healing abilities of their own body and to be able to cope better with ill health in the future. To be able do this I need to know what is wrong from your perspective.

The consultation can also help you to understand and identify patterns in your life which contribute to ill health and other problems. Homoeopathy is not just about finding the remedy. It is a process which can help you attain and maintain better health long term.

The homoeopathic consultation is an opportunity for you to begin to understand your health in the long term and gives me the opportunity to understand you and your problems. Essentially I need to know when the problem began, how it progressed what happened to you during this time and what your reactions were. It is also important for me to know your medical history, what illnesses you are susceptible to and how they affected you. Your food preferences and aversions are important as are your reactions to your environment.

The first consultation usually lasts an hour and a half. That’s usually ample time to begin the process of getting to know each other. I need to know what the changes are in your health and you need to know how I practice so there’s time at the end for you to ask me any questions you have.

If you live in South East London you can drop in and meet me at Sheel Pharmacy, Lewisham Road on Thursday Mornings between 11 and 2. Thursday afternoons I am at The Woodlands Health Centre in Hither Green. You are welcome to drop in for a consultation or to ask any questions you may have
